“DumDum” what ever the historical  information available about ,there’s a chance that it was first settled by the Gangaridhi civilization. This is based on the artifacts found under the Clive House mound, which suggests a connection between them. Plus, lots of the names of the areas in DumDum are still associated with the Nawabi era. For example, it’s said that the mosque in Nager Bazaar used to be Meer Zafar’s house, but it’s not there anymore and a new one has been built. Then Clive and the Bengal army got involved in DumDum history.

Dum Dum – A Historical Overview

During the British Raj, Dum Dum was the scene of an industrial revolution. At the same time, ‘The Garden Houses’ of the Babu community and British settlers in Calcutta began to boom. It’s a part of history that’s almost forgotten now. After the partition of India in 1947, DumDum kept growing with the influx of refugees and an ever-growing population. Unfortunately, the factories that were built there eventually closed down due to political and personal reasons, making it an unfortunate part of the DumDum story.

Nager Bazar – From Bazaar to Bustling Neighborhood

Nagerbazar(DumDum): Back in the day, this place was called ‘Ghazi Taluk’. It was owned by a guy called ‘Gazi Sahib’. Nandanath Nag, who was the landlord of ‘Arbelia village’ in the Basirhat’ area, bought some ‘parts’ from him. Some people think he took it for rent, but others think he built a market and a court here. Nager bazar is called ‘Nager bazar’ because ‘ নাগেদের বাজার ’means ‘Market of Nag family’.

Dinabandhu Choudhury from Baidyapore in the Katwa region bought a share in Gazi Sahab’s zamindari for “six anas”(ছয় আনা). His courthouse (কাছারি) was on the now-known as No. 3 Shyam Nagar Road(DumDum). Then, Dr.Jagabondhu Bose from Khulna got the rest of the ‘daas anas’ (দশ আনা) share and sold it to Khulna’s Mrigen Bose as well. Bose’s family’s courthouse (কাছারি) was now on the Gorakshya Basi Road(DumDum).

Nager Bazaar market was held every afternoon in the early days. At that time, there were no non-vegetarian food items available at Nager Bazaar. There was also a market that took place twice a week at Gora Bazaar(Dum Dum cantonment ). The Sheel family market used to take place behind the current Barowari Tola.

Nager Bazar was formerly known as Kamardanga. Kamardanga was a part of the old Nager Bazaar. Kamardanga belonged to the Shatgachi Mouza. Up until recently, the police outpost at the Nager Bazar intersection was called Kamardanga Police Outpost. Now, the name has been changed to Nager Bazar Police station. According to various written records, this police post existed before the establishment of DumDum Central Jail. Not only that, there was a prison with it and post mortem was also arranged here.

Changing Landscapes and Contemporary Significance

Dum Dum was the Headquarters of the Bengal Artillery until 1853 and is home to an ammunition factory, where the expanding bullet, the Dumdum, was first manufactured. It is also home to Jute Mills, a Tannery, Iron- and Steel-Rolling Works, Glass, Match, and Soap Factories, as well as a number of large Engineering Concerns. However, the subsequent closure of the factories due to political and personal interests is a regrettable part of the history of DumDum. Nager Bazaar is a pleasant locality and is conveniently located near schools, hospitals, airports, and Dum Dum Metro Stations. The locality of Nager Bazar has become one of the most prominent areas in North Kolkata and offers all the necessary amenities for living, such as schools, colleges, buses, markets, malls, restaurants, banks, and more.
