Girish Chandra Ghosh was a legendary dramatist who played a major role in developing Bengali theater in its indigenous yatra form. He was known for his works that showed his love for the country and his opposition to the British Raj in all its forms. His plays strongly criticized gutless begging for freedom and compromise with foreign rulers. He also addressed Hindu prejudice and superstitions through his plays. During 1880-1900, his plays featuring prominent mythological content were highly popular. Girish Ghosh used modern mythological subjects and combined them with social and political history to symbolize his form of drama. He is known as “NatyaSomrat” (King of Drama/Father of Bengali Theater) in Indian theater. His best works include “Abhimanyu Badh” (1881) and “Bhakta Dhruva”. Girish Candra Ghosh mentored “Binodini Dasi”, a significant persona of Indian theater who played her first drama in “Calcutta’s National Theatre” in 1874, a theater hall he founded. He transformed her into “NotiBinodini”, a celebrated actress in Bengali theater who was born into prostitution and started her career as a fallen woman. Later, Binodini was praised and blessed by Thakur Ramakrishna Poromohangsha for her phenomenal performance in the play “Chaitanya Lila”. Girish Chandra Ghosh passed away on February 8th, 1912, leaving behind a rich legacy in the history of Bengali theater.
